The Banshee of Newcastle Harbour

Newcastle Harbour and Bogey Hill, Newcastle

Banshee undated; fishing disaster 1843

Newcastle Harbour is said to be haunted by a banshee, a spirit from Irish mythology, who walks silently among the boats resting in the harbour. Locals say this small woman shrieks and wails in a high-pitched voice. Overlooking the harbour is Bogey Hill, and in 1843 there was a fishing disaster in which many local men were drowned. A woman dressed in black is said to stand on the hill looking out to sea, sobbing.
