The Fairy Fort on the Shimna

Large fort on the Shimna River, near Newcastle

Told around 1913

Elizabeth Andrews records in Ulster Folklore that the fairies are said to live not only in souterrains but inside certain hills and forts. As an example she names the large fort on the Shimna River near Newcastle, where she was told their music was often heard. She also heard of a lad being kept for several days in the fort of the Shimna, in the fairies' underground dwelling or cove, and writes that an attempt to bring a fort near Newcastle under cultivation was believed to have caused the sudden death of the owner.
