In Court Square, Newtownards, a ghostly man in Victorian dress is said to stand beside the war memorial. Witnesses describe him as calm and still, looking into the distance as if searching for someone. He appears most often in the hours before dawn and always alone, never speaking to or noticing passers-by.
The story behind him is that long before the memorial was built a man stood at the spot waiting to meet someone. That night he was attacked by robbers, beaten and left for dead, and he died. The tragedy was largely unrecorded. He is said to return still, pacing or standing motionless, waiting for help, for his attacker or for the person he was meant to meet.
