Hauntings

Mapperley Tunnel phantom steam train

Mapperley Tunnel (disused railway), Mapperley, Nottingham

Undated

The Gedling Eye's Halloween round-up of the borough's ghosts lists Mapperley Tunnel among its entries. The story given is brief: two schoolchildren heard a steam engine approaching the disused tunnel, even though the north end had been barricaded and no train could have come through.

No date, names or school are given in the version found, and no second source was located, so this is a single-report story. Phantom trains and railway noises are a familiar type of tale around closed lines, and the sound could have come from an operating line, but the account as printed does not say.

The pin is approximate and sits in Mapperley. It should not be read as the tunnel mouth.

Disused tunnel; do not enter.
