At a small public house on the roadside he asked them in for a refreshment. They said they had business to attend to and that after entering the house he must on no account come out or go home that night. They then turned off the high road by a private road toward a gentleman's house. The night proved unusually stormy and the man stayed at the inn. In the morning he heard that the gentleman had died the previous evening just about the time the strangers would have arrived. No one at the house or in the neighbourhood saw them.
