The Woman in Black of Newhouse, Dounby

Road near Newhouse, Dounby, Mainland

c. 1908 and later

The account is a family memory. Johina Leith, aged about nine, and her sister Mary were walking when they saw a woman in black with flowers on her hat by a grassy ditch near Newhouse. She vanished into a field.

Years afterwards Leith's cousins Charlotte Clouston and Maggie Kirkness had their own encounter on the road from Newhouse towards the meeting of the Scottish Women's Rural Institute. Maggie went back for forgotten gloves and saw a figure that disappeared. A school friend's grandfather also told of nearly hitting a woman in black in a large hat on the same stretch.

The coordinates are for Newhouse, Dounby. The exact spot of the road is not given.
