The Two Missing Birdwatchers of Eynhallow

Eynhallow, between Rousay and Mainland

14 July 1990 (claimed)

Eynhallow, the Holy Isle, is uninhabited and is said in tradition to have been the summer home of the Finfolk before they were driven off. A site that collects such stories tells of a visit on 14 July 1990 in which 88 birdwatchers went ashore and only 86 were counted on the way back, leading to a search.

The same account adds that some Orkney elders said the missing were Finfolk reclaiming their ancestral home.

I could not find a news report, coastguard record or other source for this. It reads like a modern legend that has grown round the older Finfolk tradition, and it is included for that reason, marked dubious.

Eynhallow is uninhabited and a bird sanctuary; landing needs a private boat and care with the tidal race.
