St Tredwell's Loch and the Eye Cures

St Tredwell's Chapel and Loch, Papa Westray

Medieval pilgrimage; tradition

Papa Westray is the northern isle of the Westray group. The chapel stands on a small peninsula in the loch. Historical records describe pilgrims travelling from across Orkney seeking miraculous cures, making offerings of stones and coins and then using the water.

The Triduana story is a legend that belongs to a widely known saint of eye troubles. The Papa Westray island article puts the king in the 8th century.

The pin is a general Papa Westray point as I could not fix the loch on a map.
