Hether Blether, the Island that Vanishes

Sea off Rousay

Traditional tale

Hether Blether is named among the vanishing islands where the Finfolk were said to spend their summers, along with Hildaland and Eynhallow. Many people claim to have seen it, but nobody has landed.

The tale is of a young woman from Rousay cutting peat in the hills. A man she meets persuades her to go with him and brings her to a large house of a kind she had never seen. Years go by while her father searches for her. One day the house appears out of the mist in front of him and she tells him she is well and happy there.

As he leaves she gives him a knife that will bring him luck with his fishing and help him find his way back. He drops it into the sea as he goes, the island vanishes, and he never finds it again.

The pin is a point at sea off Rousay.
