The Orkney folklorist Ernest Marwick wrote on sea superstitions and included this sighting. The two witnesses were an Orkney man and the mate of the St Angus, a contractors' vessel working for the Admiralty at Scapa.
They saw a white ship of large size that seemed to glide as if skimming over the top of the water. It then vanished. No date is given beyond being within living memory at the time of Marwick's writing.
Scapa Flow is the site of many wartime losses. This record claims nothing about any particular ship or war grave, and none is claimed in the source.
