The Ghost Ship of Clestrain

Hall of Clestrain and Hoy Sound, Orphir

18th century

The Hall of Clestrain was the home of the Honeyman family. The tale is set in the 18th century.

The household watched the sailing ship in Hoy Sound and went down to the slip. When it drew near enough to make out Honeyman and his son on the deck, it faded. A friend afterwards also reported seeing a sailing ship close to shore.

The Hall of Clestrain is also known for the 1725 raid by the pirate John Gow. This record concerns only the ship apparition. The coordinates are an approximate point on the Orphir shore of Hoy Sound.
