The Five Paisley Witches of 1677

Gallow Green, Paisley

December 1676 to 20 February 1677

The Pollok case is remarkable for its wax effigies, which were said to have been found in the house of Janet Mathie. The trial took place in Paisley, and Gallow Green was the town's execution ground for witches. Renfrewshire sources for the case give the laird's name as Sir John Maxwell in one place and Sir George Maxwell in others, and the date of the executions as 20 February 1677.

The Pollok house side of the story, including the maid Janet Douglas and her later fate, is covered in the separate Glasgow record. This entry is here so that the Paisley execution ground has its own account.

Gallow Green is a road name in Ferguslie. The precise historic site of the gallows is not certain.
