Witchcraft

Agnes Pryde and Issobell Sesbie at the Perth Circuit Court, 1656

Perth

1656

The paper notes that circuit courts became more common in the 1650s while Scotland was under English control, and that the circuit judges were less likely to find witches guilty. They were less invested in local events and less inclined to accept a confession given under torture. It is a useful contrast with the much harsher local trials of 1662.
