Castle Street runs through the old heart of Peel towards the harbour and the castle, and is claimed as the oldest street on the island. It is narrow, and after dark it is easy to feel crowded.
The story told about it is that people walking there feel ice-cold hands reaching out to them, feeling their way up towards their necks. The explanation given is not a murdered adult but children: the spirits of misbehaving schoolchildren, still up to mischief. Peel's ghost walks mention a haunted school in the town, which may be the root of the idea.
No one is named as having felt the hands, and the story appears in tourism writing rather than any older record.
