Charles I's Bed at Penkaet

Penkaet Castle, near Pencaitland

1923 onwards

The account says Professor Ian Holbourn (1872 to 1935) received the bed in 1923. It records that the bed would often be found with the bedclothes disturbed, and that there were noises and movement in the room when it was empty and locked. It also says Avis Dolphin, a survivor of the Lusitania whom Holbourn had helped, visited in 1925 and experienced ghostly contact and unexplained sounds.

The listing does not say where these details were first published. The link to Charles I is an attribution made for the bed, and nothing here shows how it was established. The ghost of John Cockburn, said to have murdered a Mr Deton in the castle, and an apparition Sir Andrew Lauder saw as a boy at a fireplace, are listed elsewhere under the same house.
