The Sandwell Valley Alligator

Sandwell Valley Country Park, West Bromwich

Sandwell Valley Country Park, a large area of parkland, farmland and lakes straddling West Bromwich, is an unlikely setting for one of the West Midlands' odder cryptid reports: a series of sightings between 1999 and 2001 of what witnesses described, with some confidence, as an American alligator swimming in one of the park's lakes, an animal entirely out of place in an ordinary suburban English park.

As with most out-of-place exotic animal reports in Britain, the most likely mundane explanation, if anything genuinely unusual was seen at all, is an escaped or deliberately released exotic pet. Alligators and caimans are kept, whether legally under licence or otherwise, by private exotic-animal owners considerably more often than most people realise, though no such release was ever confirmed by local authorities in connection with this specific case, and the animal's origin, if it existed, was never established.

No photograph or captured specimen ever resolved the case in either direction, and reports appear to have stopped entirely after 2001, whether because any real animal died or moved on from the area, or because the sightings were simply misidentifications, a large pike, a swimming dog, or a floating log, that stopped recurring once the story itself had run its course locally.
