Ghostly Arnold of the Severn Valley Railway

Severn Valley Railway, Bridgnorth Station

The Severn Valley Railway, a preserved steam line running from Bridgnorth down the river valley towards Kidderminster, has picked up a body of ghost lore typical of Britain's heritage railways more generally, places where volunteer staff routinely spend long hours working in old buildings and among historic rolling stock long after the public visitors have gone home for the day, exactly the kind of quiet, isolated conditions in which this sort of workplace folklore tends to take root.

The best known figure attached to the line is nicknamed Arnold, a presence blamed not for simple visual apparitions but for warning staff of impending mishaps, mechanical failures or accidents before they happen, a genuinely useful kind of ghost if the tradition is to be believed, more guardian than threat.

Separately, volunteers and visitors have reported the sound or sight of a phantom locomotive on the line when no train is actually scheduled to run, a motif common on former and preserved railways generally, echoing the same kind of report found at other heritage lines including the nearby Severn Valley section around Bewdley. Neither story appears to be tied to any specific named death or documented accident in the line's working history, and both circulate mainly within the railway's own close-knit community of volunteers and enthusiasts rather than in the wider public record.
