The Drowned Children of the Bassa Villa, Bridgnorth

Also known as: Magpie House

Bassa Villa, Bridgnorth

Set in the 1600s; reports undated

The Morris Leisure feature calls the Bassa Villa a 16th-century inn, now a traditional pub, known in Bridgnorth for spooky stories. It was once the Magpie House.

The story is that two children from the 1600s, Charlotte and William, were accidentally locked in the cellar while playing hide and seek. The river burst its banks and flooded the cellar and they drowned.

Reports include children crying, glasses falling from shelves and other unexplained sounds, and a figure said to be the children's mother, dressed in black and crying for them.

Hide and seek deaths are a common ghost-story motif, and the source gives no date for the flood or any named witness. The exact premises are not pinned here, only the town of Bridgnorth.
