The Blue Man Who Broke His Bonds

Sruth nam Fear Gorm, between Lewis and the Shiant Isles

Undated oral tale

One was heard to say, 'Duncan will be one man', and the other answered, 'Farquhar will be two'. At that the bound man sprang to his feet, broke his bonds as if they were spider threads, jumped overboard and went off with the two friends who had come to rescue him.

The tale is brief and has no place or date beyond the channel itself. Campbell does not explain the remark about Duncan and Farquhar, and any reading of it is guesswork. It is the only Blue Man capture story in his collection, so far as this record has found.
