The ghostly horseman of the A39

A39 near Ashcott, between Street and Bridgwater

1999 and December 2019 reports

Higgypop lists a stretch of the A39 through Somerset as haunted by a ghostly horseman who appears at various points before vanishing. It says the reports go back many years, with several in recent times.

The two dated reports are from 1999 and 2019. In 1999 a mother and daughter driving along the road saw a horseman galloping on the spot. In December 2019, local news reported that a couple driving from Street towards Bridgwater late at night saw a figure just outside the village of Ashcott, described as wearing a light sandy brown long jacket and a black hat. The apparition appeared to be pointing above their car from the opposite side of the road.

The pin is placed near Ashcott, the only place named, and is approximate. The listing does not say which news outlet carried the 2019 report, and no earlier history of a rider on this road was found, so this is a modern road-ghost report with two witnesses groups.
