The George and Pilgrims on Glastonbury High Street was built in 1475 to give hospitality to pilgrims visiting the nearby Abbey, and has a freestone front with mullioned windows. Haunted Britain says it has low beamed corridors, a winding stone stair and at least two ghosts.
One is a spectral monk, seen by many residents in the dark corridors in the early hours. An elegant lady sometimes follows him, looking at him with longing admiration on a pale, thin face. A German medium who stays regularly told the manager that the two were lovers in the days of the Abbey, and that because of his vow of celibacy their love was never consummated, leaving both earthbound.
Spooky Isles adds that cigar smoke is regularly smelled and arguments are heard, and that in the bar a seemingly solid man in old-fashioned dress passes through and then suddenly disappears.
The backstory rests on one medium's impression relayed through the manager, so it is a modern interpretation of the sightings, not a historical record. No dates or named witnesses are given.
