The Aer Lingus pilot's object over Taunton, 1962

Airspace over Taunton

21 May 1962

The only account found is a line in Wikipedia's chronology of UK UFO sightings, which cites several references that were not checked for this entry.

It says that on Monday 21 May 1962 Aer Lingus pilot Gordon Pendleton, who had flown for the RAF before joining Aer Lingus in 1952, was flying a Viscount named St Colmcille from Cork to Brussels at 17,000 feet. He saw an object moving at 600 to 700 mph with no wings and with antenna-like projections, which he could not identify, over Taunton in Somerset. The co-pilot, Peter Murphy, is also named.

Nothing more is given about what the object was, how long it was in view or whether it was investigated. The pin is a point over Taunton, and the sighting is a single report with named, professional witnesses.
