Ormiclate Castle Burns on the Day of Sheriffmuir

Ormiclate Castle (Caisteal Ormacleit), South Uist

1715

After the fire the Clanranald seat was moved north to Nunton on Benbecula, and the castle was abandoned after less than ten years of occupation. It was a T-plan, two-storey house with a forecourt to the north, and an armorial panel over the entrance survives. Local tradition says the roof was of marble. Green gneiss slabs found on the site may explain that belief.

The coincidence of the fire and the death is stated as tradition: it is not proved that the burning occurred on the same day. This record does not carry any ghost lore for the castle, none having been found in sources the project could use, and the property is a ruin. A separate record covers the curse that Carmichael attached to the same death.
