The Burton Mail list of local ghost stories includes an incident from 1954 on Harper Avenue, Burton. A teenage boy walking home one night said hello to a neighbour, Mr Dykes, who was leaning on his gate.
The neighbour returned the greeting and addressed the lad by his first name, something he had never done before. When the boy reached his own house, only two doors away, his mother told him that Mr Dykes had died that morning.
This is a classic type of story, a death apparition seen by someone unaware of the death. The source gives no named witness and it is a retelling decades later, so it is tagged as a single report. The pin marks the street.
