The Smiling Girl of Burton Market Place

Market Place, Burton upon Trent

Early 20th century

The Burton Mail compiled a list of the most haunted places in Burton and South Derbyshire for Halloween 2017. Among them is Burton Market Place, where, during the early twentieth century, two teenage boys are said to have seen a pretty girl walk across the quiet square.

She briefly glanced and smiled at them and then vanished into thin air just a few yards away. The article gives no names, no date beyond the early twentieth century, and no explanation of who the girl might have been.

It is a one line report with no named witness or original source, and is recorded as a single report. The pin marks the Market Place in the town centre.
