Stocksbridge Bypass

Stocksbridge Bypass, Sheffield

The Stocksbridge Bypass carries the A616 around the town of Stocksbridge on the north-western fringe of Sheffield, cutting through the Ewden and Little Don valleys along a route that required considerable engineering effort to push a modern road through genuinely rugged moorland terrain. Almost as soon as construction started, workers on the site began reporting things they could not easily explain: figures glimpsed at the edge of vision, unaccountable noises carrying across the valley, and a general sense of unease that some among the construction crews put down to the road cutting through old, little-disturbed ground right on the moorland edge.

The stories have been picked up and repeated enough since, particularly among paranormal writers covering Yorkshire's various road ghosts, that the bypass has earned a genuine reputation as one of the more unsettling stretches of tarmac anywhere in the county, a road that carries its construction-era reputation forward into its ongoing daily use by ordinary drivers.

As with most haunted-road stories of this kind, there is no single named incident or individual witness at the centre of it, more an accumulated sense shared among people who worked there during construction and drivers who have used the finished road since, that something about the route simply feels wrong. It is worth noting honestly that this is atmosphere and repetition rather than a documented case with hard evidence, but the road and the valley it runs through are entirely real, and the reports genuinely do go back to the build itself rather than starting later as a purely internet-era invention.

A public road (A616); no special access required, though it is not a place to stop.
