Selling winds is a widespread seafaring belief. Miller sets the story in a chapter of Scenes and Legends devoted to the Ness and gives it as local tradition. Like much in that book it is told in a literary way, with dialogue and detail that cannot be traced to a recorded account, so the dates and names should be taken as part of the telling.
