Ryan Hurley, 17, a trainee gamekeeper, said he saw a very big black creature lying with its back to him that got up and ran off hunkered down at amazing speed. One of the guns, the journalist Arnot McWhinnie, later said he had also seen a four-foot cat-like animal in the same wood from about 20 yards, and that he first thought it was a very wet fox.
