Todmorden Unitarian Church, built in the 1860s in an elaborate Gothic Revival style funded by the wealthy Fielden family, is one of the more architecturally striking churches anywhere in the Calder Valley, its soaring spire and dramatic detailing standing out even among the region's many impressive Victorian religious buildings. Its atmospheric graveyard and dramatic interior have made it a regular destination for ghost hunters, including a well-publicised visit from the television series Most Haunted that brought the church's reputation to a considerably wider audience.
Reported phenomena include shadowy figures glimpsed moving among the gravestones after dark, unsettling for anyone passing the churchyard on a quiet evening, and strange noises heard both inside the church itself and around its surrounding grounds.
Photographs taken by visitors and investigators have also produced what some describe as camera anomalies, unexplained marks, orbs or distortions that appear in images taken at the site, though such photographic evidence is inherently difficult to verify with any confidence and is treated with considerably more scepticism by serious researchers than it typically is by casual visitors hoping to capture something unusual. As with most well-known ghost-hunting venues of this kind, no single documented incident anchors the church's overall reputation; it functions more as an accumulation of atmosphere, striking architecture and repeated visitor testimony than as a case built around any one specific historical event.
