Whitworth Hall Country Park Hotel occupies a substantial historic house on the edge of Spennymoor, and its long life as a private home before its eventual conversion into a hotel has left it with more than one ghost story attached to its many rooms and corridors. The best known involves a woman named Elizabeth, who died sometime in the 1800s and is consistently described dressed in black across every retelling, still said to walk the building today exactly as she is remembered from her own lifetime.
A second, considerably less detailed story concerns a male ghost said to have died of a broken heart, though no further identity or specific circumstance is given for him anywhere beyond that single, evocative detail.
Neither story comes with independent documentation to support it, and both rest on the kind of repeated oral tradition typical of a large old house that has changed use several times over the centuries, each new generation of staff and guests apparently passing the stories on much as they received them.
