Hauntings

Doors, Footsteps and a Shadow Figure in Armagh Gaol

Armagh Gaol, Gaol Square, Armagh

2009 to 2015 investigations; a 1998 officer's report

Sharon Clarke, writing for Spooky Isles, described joining a late-night group in Armagh Gaol and finding the interior little changed over the centuries. In the solitary cells and the female wing she felt a heavy sense of hopelessness. Outside, on the ground where executions had taken place, some in the group felt dizzy, which she was careful to say could be put down to knowing the history.

The account turns at B Wing, where the men were held. Phone batteries began to drain and people could not take photographs. Cell doors on the upper landing banged with large repeated thuds, louder when cameras or phones were used. Then four members of the group said they saw a tall male figure come down the steel stairs towards them, and one said it was standing beside her. Clarke herself reported a black shadow moving among the group. She led everyone away and said the banging grew faster as they left.

Spirited Isle lists other claims. In 1998 a night officer is said to have followed heavy bootsteps through C Block and found the wing empty, with a single fresh heel print in the dust. In 2009 a television team, Northern Ireland's Greatest Haunts, took mediums into the gaol and reported contact with two spirits, one named Daniel and described as sorrowful, the other named Jack and described as angry. Equipment spikes and temperature drops were reported during that session. These are unverified.

Gaol is closed to the public.
