The Headless Horse of Mullenakill

Mullenakill, near Armagh (Verner family burial ground)

Napoleonic-era story; told in 2015

Armagh I's 2015 round-up of seven Armagh ghost tales begins with a headless horse. The article says it is not the headless horseman of the usual tale but the horse itself, and ties it to Sir William Verner, an Armagh native who served in the Napoleonic wars, was wounded at Waterloo and resigned as a colonel.

In the story Verner took his horse, named Constantine, into battle. Its head fell off, and he brought the body home to bury in the family graveyard. The piece does not say who has seen the horse, or when.

Because there is no named witness and no date, this is better read as a local legend attached to a known family than as a haunting report. The location is given only as Mullenakill, near Armagh.
