The Lady in White and the Phantom Piano at the Argory

The Argory, Derrycaw Road, Moy (County Armagh side of the Blackwater)

Reports in the 21st century

The Argory is a neo-classical mansion built around 1820 beside the River Blackwater, the home of the MacGeough Bond family for more than a century and cared for by the National Trust since the 1970s. It was one of the first houses in Ireland to have acetylene gas lighting, which is still preserved.

Spirited Isle says a mysterious lady in white has been seen wandering the upper floors, standing at windows over the gardens or moving along corridors before vanishing. Visitors and guides are said to have heard piano notes from the music room when nobody was near it. Staff are also said to have felt sudden chills in warm rooms, the sense of being watched near the grand staircase and former nursery, and soft footsteps following them through an empty house.

A comment from someone who says they once worked at the house adds an important check. They write that no music room exists at the Argory, though an organ and a piano are on the site, and that the organ has a music drum so it can play with no one at the keys. They also say they never heard staff mention a woman wandering the rooms. The piano story may therefore have a mechanical explanation.
