In the last week of October 2024 people over a wide part of north Armagh reported strange lights in the sky. They were seen over Portadown, Craigavon and Lurgan, in the countryside round the shores of Lough Neagh and as far away as Tandragee. A woman on the Dungannon Road outside Portadown filmed them for about twenty minutes at around 9.20 pm. She said the lights moved back and forth, stopped for about three minutes and then began again, and that they were not a helicopter, because the light was wider than a flashing one, and not high enough for a plane.
People in Craigavon shared dozens of videos. Some guessed at Starlink satellites or police helicopters, and some joked about aliens.
The Northern Ireland World newspaper reported that the likely source was a projector at the Rushmere Shopping Centre in Craigavon, which was throwing Halloween characters onto the sky ahead of its Halloween event and fireworks at Craigavon Lakes. It presented this as the believed source, with a video of the display.
