A familiar spirit in this period was a being that attended a witch, sometimes seen as an animal, sometimes as a ghost or a person. In Gowdie's case they overlap with fairy belief, as in Robert Kirk's later book on fairies, which speaks of seers having something like a familiar.
Her long list is part of why historians consider the confessions so rich as a record of belief.
