Cairndhu House was built in the late 1870s by the Scottish textile merchant Stewart Clark as a sixty-room summer retreat. In 1918 it was bought by Sir Thomas and Lady Dixon, who gave it to the state in 1947 as a convalescent hospital, which opened in 1950 and closed in 1986. It has stood derelict since and is in private ownership.
People report faces in the windows. In 1992 a newly married couple photographing their wedding in the grounds found, when the prints came back, the sad face of a woman in a nurse's uniform looking from a window. A child in Victorian dress is said to appear in a photograph taken in 1997 when nobody like that was there. Dog walkers say their dogs refuse to approach the house or bark at something unseen. Those who have gone inside report slamming doors, footsteps, banging and rustling, and caretakers described noises beneath the floorboards. Some paranormal writers claim at least three presences. In May 1997 investigators are said to have had trouble opening the front door.
No investigator names or documents are given beyond the retellings.
