The Englishman and the Castle at Balmacara

Druim a Dubh, Balmacara (exact site not identified)

Attributed to the 1600s; fulfilled before 1877

Mackenzie says the late Mr Lillingstone was an Englishman, much loved for his kindness to tenants, and that at first he had no family, so old people doubted he was the man. Then a son and two daughters were born. After his death the son sold Lochalsh to Alexander Matheson, MP for Ross and Cromarty. A castle was built at Duncraig, some distance from the place named.

Mackenzie observes that if a Matheson castle is still to be built on Druim a Dubh, the prophecy has not been wholly fulfilled, and says it would hardly have been made up after the event with such a remote detail.

Balmacara Estate is partly National Trust for Scotland land; the named hill is not marked for visitors.
