The Sheep from Conchra to Bun-da-Loch

Lochalsh and Kintail (Conchra to Bun-da-Loch)

Attributed to the 1600s; printed 1877

Sheep will then reach their peak in price and decline until they are so forgotten that a man finding a sheep's jawbone in a cairn will not know what it is. The old owners of the land will give way to merchant proprietors and the whole Highlands will become one deer forest, so empty that the crow of a cock will not be heard north of Druim Uachdair. The people will emigrate to islands not yet discovered.

At the end, the deer and wild animals of the huge wilderness are to be drowned by horrid black rains, and the people will return and take undisturbed possession of their ancestors' lands. Mackenzie takes the sheep part as fulfilled with the Clearances and says the rest was still to come.
