Room 611, Alanbrooke Hall

Alanbrooke Hall, Malone Road, Belfast (demolished 2004)

1981 to 1982

Alanbrooke Hall was a 1960s tower block of student accommodation on the Malone Road, demolished in 2004. In 1981 two students shared room 611. The microbiology student, named Ken in the account, woke to see a black silhouette near a desk, felt a deafening white noise and a sense of evil, and lunged at it, whereupon it vanished. His roommate had also had a strange experience, seeing a young man in his mind's eye who felt threatening. On another occasion, alone on a weekend, Ken heard the lift doors open and heavy footsteps stop outside. Violent banging shook the door, but when he opened it there was only the empty lift. He learned that earlier occupants had also had strange experiences, including objects being thrown.

In 1982 two new students in the room had vivid shared nightmares, where one would start a nightmare and the other would dream its second half. Poltergeist activity followed, including cutlery arranged on the floor where they would step out of bed. One student described the presence as pure distilled evil.

The story is still told on Belfast ghost coach tours, which name the site as the former home of the cursed Alanbrooke Hall.
