The Lyric Theatre opened on Ridgeway Street in 1968 and stood for four decades until it was demolished in 2008. A new theatre on the same site opened in 2011. Even before redevelopment the old building was thought to be haunted. Crew and performers talked of a shadowy figure crossing the stage just before curtain-up, thought by many to be a former actor reluctant to take his final bow, and of faint indistinct voices in the empty auditorium during rehearsals. One technician swore he saw a man in the stalls while adjusting the lights, and the seats were empty when he looked again.
Some believe the ghosts never left, and still watch from the wings of the new theatre.
