Craigavon House on Circular Road in East Belfast was built in 1870 for James Craig. In the First World War it served as a hospital for wounded servicemen and later became a nursing home. It has been largely abandoned since 1999.
In 2014 the East Coast Paranormal Society investigated. Over the years there had been many stories of a dedicated matron called Ethel, who worked there for many years and was forced to retire against her will in the 1950s. When she died her ghost is said to have returned to carry on her work even though the patients are long gone. It is claimed that if you call her by name walking through the house, you will be acknowledged.
During the investigation the team believed they caught the likeness of a bearded man in a mirror, though no one on the team had a beard, and thought another spirit was trying to manifest, possibly Ethel. Tour guides say the ghosts of First World War soldiers treated there have been seen on several occasions. Whispering and moaning are said to come from one of the mirrors, someone walking on an upper corridor has been heard, and a scent of lavender noticed.
