The Strand Cinema on Holywood Road opened in 1935 with an Art Deco design said to be inspired by Harland and Wolff, and is believed to be the city's only surviving pre-war cinema. It now also hosts theatre, music and community events, and it has a reputation for being haunted.
The most active area is said to be the main screen and stage. A former staff member refused to work there again after cleaning alone late one night and seeing a man calmly walking down the aisle toward him, only for the figure to vanish before reaching the front. During a later investigation a team in the same area recorded unusual EMF activity, and one investigator said they made contact with the spirit of a 16-year-old girl who had lived locally before the cinema was built and who was drawn to one of them, saying she reminded her of her mother. Another member saw a faint mist above two people in the group.
Elsewhere, in one room a former worker is said to have taken his own life many years ago, and staff and investigators have reported shadowy figures, sudden temperature drops and a feeling of being watched.
