The Hitchhiker at the Horseshoe Bend

Horseshoe Bend, Crumlin Road, Belfast

Early 1970s to 2008

The Crumlin Road was the main route from Belfast towards the airport. At a sharp bend with a steep gradient, called the Horseshoe Bend, drivers began to report in the early 1970s that they saw a hitchhiker waiting by the road. As the car came near, the figure vanished. The last sighting known to the writers who collected the story was in 2008.

Icy Sedgwick points out that the site has no trees or other obstructions that might create an optical illusion. Spirited Isle notes that the bend has been the scene of several accidents and that sightings continued into the 2000s. Nobody has put a name or an event to the figure, so this belongs with the many phantom hitchhiker reports that are told about bends and bridges across the British Isles.
