The first stretch of the M1 motorway opened in the early 1960s. A few years later stories of a mysterious hitchhiker began, and one early account was filmed for Ulster Television, in which a motorist named William Nesbitt spoke about meeting a ghostly figure by the roadside that vanished without explanation.
The legend usually describes a lone traveller appearing suddenly near a flyover, sometimes stepping towards oncoming cars, sometimes signalling for a lift, and disappearing when anyone slows. Later versions say the figure is a woman who died on the road, but no confirmed record connects the story to a real death.
Early accounts mention a motorway flyover and the stretch between Broadway and the suburbs on the west of Belfast. No junction has been verified. The coordinates here are for the general area, not a confirmed spot.
