On 15 May 1862 a wealthy merchant, John Herdman, was shot dead near the Waterworks in north Belfast. Spirited Isle says that later that evening his second cousin, William, was arrested at a nearby hotel and charged with the murder.
The ghost of a tall man dressed in fine period clothes has been seen walking in the area. Witnesses say the apparition vanishes as soon as it is spotted.
The link between that figure and Herdman is the assumption of the tellers, and no identifying detail is given.
