The drowned girl of the Wargrave ferry

Riverside path behind the George and Dragon, Wargrave

Winter 1878 event

The Wargrave entry in Berkshire History includes a ferry sinking in the frozen winter of 1878. The passengers are given as Captain Markham, his sister and the ferryman's young daughter.

The ferry sank, and the child is said to have drowned. Her spirit is said to walk the riverside path behind the George and Dragon inn.

The source gives the year but no account of the casualties beyond the girl, and no newspaper report was found to check it. The pin is placed on the riverside path near the village centre.
