The same author has elsewhere said that he is more open to the tunnel idea than to some other Blantyre myths, because it has been mentioned so often over the decades. A tunnel beneath a river of that width would be an extraordinary undertaking, and the slab is a stone found in a wood and not proof of a passage. The story follows the familiar pattern of a secret tunnel joining two neighbouring medieval sites.
