The 1745 setting is real, and Seaforth did sit out the rising. Mackenzie's account of how is a family anecdote, and the claim that the Seer foretold it can be neither proved nor disproved. It shows how the fulfilment stories were built: a loose line about a jawbone, matched with a comic scene.
