MoD files released in 2009 show ministers were alerted because the photographs were thought likely to become a news story, and analysts concluded the images showed a solid craft of around 25 metres and were not fakes. The case was marked 'object unexplained, case closed, no further action'. Nick Pope called it the most impressive picture his department saw. In 2022 the journalist David Clarke found the surviving original print through a retired RAF press officer, Craig Lindsay, after it had been thought lost. The reverse was marked 'Copyright Kevin Russell c/o the Daily Record', though nobody of that name has been identified as a witness. The photographic expert Andrew Robinson judged the image a genuine photograph while saying staging in front of the camera could not be ruled out.
