The 1689 battle was the first major clash of the Jacobite cause. Highland forces charged from higher ground and the government troops managed only a few volleys before hand-to-hand fighting; about 2,000 government soldiers were lost. The ghost reports have no dated eyewitness, and they read as an annual tradition rather than a series of recorded investigations.
